Becca's Closet was created as a legacy to Rebecca Kirtman and the project she started. Becca's Closet provides formal attire to high school students who otherwise would not be able to attend their prom/homecoming. They hold public events for girls to look through and try on gowns right before prom season, in addition to setting up personal appointments.
"Little things can make a big difference..." This was the phrase that served as the driving force behind the beautiful life and caring actions of 16-year-old Rebecca Kirtman - Becca, a cheerleader, honor student, and caring young woman, who passed away in a tragic automobile accident on August 20, 2003. Today, we remember her for her contributions to the community and have partnered with Centenary College, an affiliate chapter of Beccas closet, to collect prom dresses. If you would like to donate a dress or any of the items on the following "wish list," please contact us.
* Rolling racks (industrial strength)
* Clear plastic hangers
* Extra-long clear garment bags

* Jersey Cares
"When someone arrives on the doorstep of a local shelter, their lives have reached a point at which they often have none of the essentials that most of us take for granted. Women seeking refuge from abusive situations, victims of the economy whose search for income has been fruitless, children whose parents are in desperate circumstances and others in similar situations usually lack basic items such as toothpaste, moisturizer and hairbrushes. Generous volunteers like those of the We Are Impacting Communities Organization, Inc. help Jersey Cares to ease the pain of this difficult life transition and provide comfort to our neighbors who have never needed more to know that someone cares." - B. Dean, Executive Director

You Are Worth It
Do not undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others.
It is because we are different that each of us is special.
Do not set your goals by what other people deem important.
Only you know what is best for you.
Do not take for granted the things closest to your heart.
Cling to them as you would your life, for without them, life is meaningless.
Do not let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past nor for the future.
By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life.
Do not give up when you still have something to give.
othing is really over until the moment you stop trying.
It is a fragile thread that binds us to each other.
Do not be afraid to encounter risks.
It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.
Do not shut love out of your life by saying it is impossible to find.
The quickest way to receive love is to give love; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly.
Do not dismiss your dreams.
To be without dreams is to be without hope; to be without hope is to be without purpose.
Do not run through life so fast that you forget not only where you have been, but also where you are going.
Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way.

We Are Impacting Communities, Inc. express our heartfelt appreciation to Crystal A. Jones, two year Breast Cancer Survivor, who inspires us all. Here is her story of triumph. . .
My name is Crystal A. Jones, and I am a breast cancer survivor.
It was Thanksgiving Day and boy, did I realize I had a lot to be thankful. I found a lump in my breast and I told my boyfriend, Michael.
Michael examined the lump; and from the look on his face, I could tell he was worried. I called the doctor and the rest happened so
fast - a biopsy was performed and in three days, I was scheduled for a mastectomy.
When the doctor told me about my prognosis, I was so scared. I immediately called my brothers and Michael and together, we went
to my parents' house. I thought I was keeping a secret, but it holds true that a mother knows her child. My mom is my best friend.
She knew something was wrong. I told her my prognosis. She held my hand and told me that everything would be alright; and we
were in this together. My family supported and embraced me with love - which is the basis of our foundation. They reassured me that
I would not go through this alone.
The next day, I went to work and informed my co-workers. They formed a circle of prayer and prayed for me (which included people
from all over the world). Everyone was of a different faith; but I believed we all prayed to the same GOD! My mom called everyone she
knew, and they put me on their prayer list. Before I knew it, I was on a prayer list everywhere!
My family and I went to my follow-up doctor's appointment. When the surgery was scheduled, my heart dropped and the tears started flowing. My first thought was about my child! I asked GOD not to do this to me because I am all my son has. I prayed and cried; prayed and cried. I went for a walk with Michael and told him that I didn't want to die. He told me that I was not going to die and would be alright. Michael told me that I had work to do, a child to raise, and was not going anywhere! I knew I had my family and crazy support. The support was so heavenly that I felt like I was floating! My best friend, Leslie, happened to lose her job on the day I found out that I had breast cancer and never left my side! Oh, I forgot to tell you that I had angels for doctors. My gynecologist stayed with me every step of the way; and when my doctor informed me that I had a large lump with satellites spreading to my lymph nodes, he prayed for me. We had a lot of work ahead of us. If you don't understand, let me make you understand how powerful my support was. It was all around and through me! Michael and I wrote a song for them. The name of the song is Angels By My Side.
The day of the mastectomy was very quiet. It seemed that I could not get it together. Michael and I went to pick up my mom, and off to the hospital we went. So; I am in the hospital, waiting to go into surgery which was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. However, I didn't get wheeled into surgery until 3:00 p.m.! Can you imagine the anxiety that was flowing through the waiting room? I was taken to the operating room and then I woke up. My doctor told me that I must have had a lot of people who had a connection with GOD, because he only found one lump and it did not spread. My family rejoiced! My mom, who is very reserved, jumped and shouted Thank you GOD! I am so blessed - I felt no pain and went home the next day.
I still had a long road to travel. I needed chemotherapy every three weeks for six months. When the doctor told me I needed chemotherapy, the only thing that stayed in my mind was that I was going to lose my long, flowing hair. As an African American woman, having naturally long hair is quite a feat to achieve. Upon arriving at the hospital for my first chemo treatment, I sat waiting for something to happen. It was okay - I didn't feel anything. I went home and within three days, I began to feel sick. I lost my appetite and taste buds. I felt nauseous all the time and vomited. Within the three weeks of chemotherapy, I tried to hold on to my hair; but eventually lost it.
Let me tell you something - GOD puts people in your path for a reason. I was at my lowest point and was on my way to purchase
a wig; however, I never purchased one. A saleswoman in the wig store sensed something was wrong with me; so I told her my
story. She asked me to go home, shave my head, and take my power back - get control of my situation. " When you have lemons,
you make lemonade." I took her advice and decided to try it bald. I then went home and called my two best friends Leslie and
Stacey. They came over to my house, got drunk and shaved my head. Next, I went to see my dad and he told me that I was the
most beautiful woman that he had ever seen. One of my brothers shaved his head and the other cut off his ponytail. Hallelujah, I
was delivered, got my power back and was ready to take on the world! The saying is true - "You are not your hair."
Today, I am feeling great and taking each day as it comes. I am the featured vocalist in a band called Breez, the band 4 the event. In addition to my child and family, Breez is my therapy. We now have our debut cd out entitled "Come Catch the Breez." It has received air play and creating quite a buzz. I believe that my musical talent helps me focus and keeps me grounded and never miss a show. As a matter of fact, our audience thought that I shaved my head for a new look and it worked! (smile) I am renewed. I focus on positivity and keep good thoughts. I am here, standing strong, and loved. There is life after cancer.
Blessings to you,
Crystal A. Jones
